We’ve all heard students have a reputation for prioritising a night at the pub over a tidy flat.
And we wanted to put this to the test and have a little fun at the same time, so we ran a competition to find the UK’s messiest student accommodation, to see if kitchens, bedrooms and living rooms in student digs really do get as bad as they say…
We asked students to share images of their filthy accommodation and the winners got a £200 Just Eat voucher so they can enjoy a takeaway on us after a good tidy (or not).
Sarah, from Brighton University, was crowned the winner…
We got some hilarious and slightly disgusting entries that showed piles of washing up like we have never seen before, bedrooms scattered with clothes, food and rubbish, and living rooms after a heavy night out.
This made choosing a winner rather difficult but Sarah’s kitchen in Brighton stood out as an obvious favourite.
1. Sarah, 20, Brighton University

Mmmm floor pizza! And a kettle in the sink?! This sight is not something you want to have to deal with after a heavy night on the tiles. The sheer volume of chaos in this picture earned Sarah and her pals the £200 food voucher, so they can add a few more takeaway boxes to the collection.
The Best (or Worst) of the Rest
After all the great entries we got, we couldn’t just show you one. You can get your fill of chaotic bedrooms and kitchen nightmares below:
2. Natasha, Derby University

Natasha sent us this photo from her accommodation in Derby, looks like she is behind on her washing. If you look carefully enough, you can see her opportunist cat who hopes she doesn’t find the washing machine any time soon.
3. Josh, Nottingham Trent University

Josh from Nottingham Trent University shared this spectacular image, can you spot his house mate amongst the mess? Looks like the two of them have a lot of cleaning to do on a hangover…
4. Jack, Oxford Brookes University

We’re not exactly sure how Jack, from Oxford Brookes University, manages to get around his room. Clothes, bedding and dodgy meal deals everywhere, it’s all ok though, he has some incense sticks…
5. Cassie, Bournemouth University

Maximising wardrobe space by leaving everything on the floor, this ‘messy gal’ is one step ahead of us all. It can’t be easy finding an outfit in that pile of clothes.
6. Max, Cardiff University

Finally, someone found the bin bags! Looks like Max and his flatmates have a big clean up on their hands here… Stella, Greggs, and Red Stripe, a classy combo and student staple.
7. Clare, Tresham College

An overflowing washing basket and… is that a wardrobe finally being used? The rest of our entries could learn a lot from Clare, someone just needs to point them all in the direction of a washing machine.
8. Matt, Leeds Metropolitan University
Although this one is a video, we had to include it. Matt captured the devastation left behind in his student accommodation in Leeds. It just keeps going and going, can mess get so bad it almost becomes impressive?
Thank you to everyone who entered out search to find the UK’s messiest student accommodation, it was a lot of fun looking through the pictures knowing we didn’t have to tidy up any of the mess!
